Lava Stone Tiles

Lava stone provides a natural and very appealing dark veneer option.  It is a versatile stone that can be used for kitchens, bathrooms, interior floors and walls, and exterior applications.  Tiles are very common, but large format surfaces are available as well.  Because lava stone is a product of nature, the texture can vary, and no two pieces are alike.  Careful selection is needed to obtain the look you are going for.

Lava stone arises from the fire of a volcano.  Depending on the area of the world and the subsoil there, the lava or magma displays different material properties, affecting the surface of the lava stone.  Therefore lava stone is a generic term from a geological standpoint.

Lava stone has varying amounts of vesicles, or holes.  They are formed when the gases in the magma create bubbles in the molten rock, some of which get locked in place when the rock cools.  These holes provide the graining found in lava stone.  It can be varied and rich.

Lava stone is heat resistant.  This is no surprise, given its beginnings in the depths of volcanoes.  As a thermally stable stone, it can manage very high temperatures.  The surface of lava stone can then be heated further in an oven, sometimes up to 1500°.  Depending on this temperature, different textures will appear on the surface.   It will also become harder, more durable, and non-porous.

Lava stone color generally ranges from light gray to darker black.  Lava stone from different locations can result in different looks.  Because stone is a product of nature, no two pieces are alike.   We can carefully select lava stones for your project to assure the look and texture you are going for.  When the right stone is chosen, and composed in the right way, lava stone can be one of the most unique stones for interior and exterior surfaces.  Contact us to learn more.

USES:

Lava stone can be used for flooring and wall surfaces, both for indoor and outdoor applications.

Color Range

Lava stone is a natural stone with colors based on the magna found in particular volcanoes.  This will depend on the minerals in the lava.  We offer dark blacks to medium shade grays, as we find they offer the best visual appeal.  Some tiles show contrasting colors, creating a more rustic aesthetic.

Lava stone can exhibit mild color variation from slab to slab, so selecting specific tiles is important.

Grain & Visual Pattern:

Lava stone’s visual variations allow for a range of aesthetics.  It can be smooth and refined, or textured with a rugged appearance.  It can also be heated for custom silk screen patterns, or etched for a patterned tile look.

Rustic looking lava stone can be found with holes, tracks, and streaks.

Carefully selecting the pattern of the lava stone for your project is recommended to find your tailored look.

Texture and Finish:

Lava stone has a naturally rough texture due to its holes.  Therefore, it is suitable for:

  • a naturally aged finish
  • a rustic finish with a rough texture
  • a brushed finish

The holes in lava stone can also be reduced by heating the stone in an oven, providing a smooth and even texture, making it great for:

  • a satin finish
  • a light brush finish
  • a smooth, mechanically sanded finish

However, due to the many different colors and pattern anomalies found with different stones, the right finish will depend on the lava stone tiles you choose.
