Quartzite Slab – Coffee Gray

$2,200.00

Beautiful quartzite with coffee colors.  Quartzite is an extremely dense natural stone.  It does not etch when exposed to acidic foods, making a versatile stone for kitchen countertops and backsplashes.  We carefully curate a selection of beautiful quartzite slabs that are technically more durable and visually more vibrant than other quartzites.  We visit the quarries to hand select these slabs.  We currently have this quartzite in stock in limited quantities.  We can get any pattern or stone by special order.

Quartzite is a hard, non-foliated metamorphic rock which is made almost entirely of the mineral quartz.  Quartzite began its geologic life as sand grains, perhaps on a beach, desert sand dune, or riverbed.  Over time, the sand grains stuck together and were compressed, forming sandstone.  As the sandstone gets buried deeper under layers of rock, it gets hotter and more compressed.  The sandstone is converted into quartzite with enough pressure and heat from tectonic compression.

Quartzite is usually light colored because quartz sand is light colored.  Additional minerals brought in by groundwater can add hues of green, blue, or rust-red.  Quartzite is often found with vivid coloring.

Quartzite is a very hard stone.  The mohs diagram below shows that it is even harder than granite.

We hand select our quartzite from the quarries to assure the best look and texture.  Because stone is a product of nature, no two pieces are alike.  Natural stone from different locations can result in different looks.  Stop by or order a sample to confirm the look you want.  When the right slab is chosen, and composed in the right way, quartzites can be one of the most unique stones for your interior surfaces.

USES:

Quartzite is primarily used for countertops, but can also be used for wall surfaces, both for indoor and outdoor.

Environmental

We believe when the building industry sources and manufactures building materials with sustainability in mind, we all live in a healthier world, and we want to do our part.  Quartzite is ecologically friendly.  It does not contain any VOCs, and are better than their non eco-friendly counterparts.

Color Range

Quartzite is a natural stone, with as many colors found in nature.  It will depend on the location it comes from and the minerals available.  Some quartzites are monotone while others show wildly contrasting colors, creating a more rustic aesthetic.

One type of quartzite can exhibit mild color variation from slab to slab, so selecting specific slabs for your project is important.

Grain & Visual Pattern:

Quartzite’s visual pattern variations allow for a range of aesthetics.  It can be calm and refined, or busy with a wild appearance.

Carefully selecting the pattern on the slab for your project is recommended to achieve a tailored look.

Texture and Finish:

Quartzite is a hard stone, so it can be finished with a variety of textures.  It is suitable for:

  • a natural finish
  • a rustic finish with a rough texture

The texture of quartzite can also be refined with a smooth and even texture, making it great for:

  • a satin finish
  • a honed finish
  • a light brush finish
  • a smooth, mechanically sanded finish

Due to the different colors and patterns found in different stones, the right finish will depend on the specific stones you choose.

abrasion resistance: high

Quartzite has relatively high abrasion resistance.  It rates as a 7 or higher on the Mohs hardness scale.  It is less likely to scratch than marble, limestone, slate, onyx, etc..

Absorption: Moderate

Quartzite has a low to moderate absorption rate.  Always seal it prior to use.  Oil and highly pigmented liquids can penetrate and stain the stone.  To reduce the appearance of stains, wipe up spills immediately.

Acid Sensitivity: Minimal

Quartzite is minimally sensitive to acids.  It will not acid etch or lose its surface sheen when exposed to acidic liquids like tomatoes or lemons.

Freeze-thaw: resistant

Due to known material weakness or because this material has not been tested, it is not suitable for use in exterior applications where freeze-thaw cycles are a concern.
