White Oak

White Oak Wood – timeless and rich.  Perfect for interior cabinets, floors and walls.  No matter the environment, there is a white oak option that can make your space pop.  Our white oak displays sharp, dark brown rays and medium brown grains throughout a backdrop of reddish yellow.  Grain patterns often showcase fine lines and pin stripes, but can vary wildly with knots and wormholes.  We source our white oak comes from sustainable forests where we know the farmers or harvesters.  We then hand select our lumber to assure a unique surface for home interiors.  Finish it roughly or smoothly, and seal it for a matte or gloss look.

Oak is one of the most common lumbers used for interior construction.  While much oak is used for timber, we are focused on finding and using only the highest quality wood.  When the right lumber is used, it can be one of the most beautiful woods to work with due to its grain pattern and character.

White Oak has an open grain with large pores, which leads to its classic grain pattern.  The graining can be further accentuated when stained.  White Oak has a coarse texture which can be kept for a more rustic look.  It can also be finely sanded and varnished for a more refined look.  Oak has incredible workability, and can even be steam bended.

White Oak is a hardwood tree species.  It comes from a large deciduous tree known as Quercus alba, native to Connecticut, Maryland, and Illinois.  White Oak wood can be used for cabinets, interior flooring and walls, trim and millwork, and veneers.

Wood is a product of nature, and therefore no two pieces are alike.  The exact same oak species growing in different locations can result in wildly different looks.  Please stop by or order a sample to confirm the exact look you want.

USES:

White Oak is a great wood for cabinets, interior flooring, and interior millwork.

Color Range

There is wide color variation in natural oak, and like all woods, its color changes over time.  It depends a lot on the exact species of oak, and the growing conditions of the tree.  Therefore White Oak will exhibit moderate color variation from board to board. Most natural oak has a background of light tan with a reddish tinge (though less red than red oak), and darker grains of browns and golds.  Oak is one of the few woods whose color is thought to get better with age.

Quartersawn white oak displays ray fleck patterns, and longer, thin rays of dark browns and grays.

Staining is common with oak, usually with a color oil or varnish, which allows for an even wider range of colors.  But we believe there is no need to stain white oak — it’s naturally beautiful.

Finish and Texture:

Oak can be treated and finished in a large number of ways.  Therefore the final texture and finish can vary widely, achieving different looks for different spaces.

Oak planks can be roughly finished, lightly brushed, or smooth sanded.  Our rough finish provides a rustic look.  A light brush for a slight smoothing of the surface results in a lightly textured finish with a slight relief.  Smooth sanding can provide a more modern aesthetic.

Oak can then be varnished for a matte finish or a glossy shine.

Grain:

White Oak has a straight grain, but the type of cut can greatly affect the appearance because red oak has very large pores.  The pores are so big and open that you can blow into one end of the wood, and air will come out the other end.  We look for Oak with no visible knots on the surface.

Workability:

White oak is easy to work.  It is also easy to stain and finish, and glues well.  White oak has high shrinkage values, resulting in below average dimensional stability.  It responds well to steam-bending.

Rot Resistance:

White oak is rated as non-durable to perishable.  It stains when in contact with water, and has poor insect resistance.  White oak should be used indoors, and properly protected.
