Palisander

Palisander – warm, deep, and rich.  Perfect for stunning interior cabinets.  Palisander is a type of Rosewood, and it displays a great mix of light and medium browns, with linear streaks of dark browns, grays, and greens, and sometimes a purple or reddish tint.  Palisander has a prominent straight grain pattern.  We source our Palisander from a sustainable forest where we know the harvester.  We then hand select specific lumber to provide the most unique surfaces for interiors.  There is no need to stain this wood; just finish it smoothly and seal.

Palisander is a beautiful wood for interiors with a lot of character.  It features a smooth combination of light and dark browns.  The grain pattern is typically straight.  When the wood panel are designed and combined in the right way, it can be one of the most beautiful woods in our collection.

Palisander is a hardwood tree species.  Its scientific name is Dalbergia.  It is also known as Rosewood.  In construction, Palisander wood can be used for cabinets and veneers.

Wood is a product of nature, and therefore no two pieces are alike.  Please stop by or order a sample to confirm the exact look you want.

Choose unique surfaces to bring your HOME to life:

The finish materials you use for the surfaces around your home can become some of the most important focal points in your home.  Using a carefully selected wood for interior floors, cabinets, and other surfaces can add a unique tactile effect that projects beauty and luxury.  With our carefully curated building materials, your home can set a new standard.  Our Exotic Wood options are a great example.

USES:

Palisander can be used for cabinets (and veneer for cabinets).  It is often used for furniture, and you may recognize it from the popular Eames lounge chair and ottoman.

Color Range

Light yellow-brown to reddish brown, with darker brown streaks.  Moderate color variation.

We rarely stain Palisander because we love its beautiful existing color range.

Finish and Texture:

Palisander has a medium-fine texture.  Its larger pores result in a prominent and textured grain, sometimes with a “spider-webbing” figure.

We avoid stain and finish the wood with a light brush in order to allow the wood’s natural beauty to show through.

Different varnishes can be applied to achieve the desired finish or sheen.

Grain:

Palisander has a straight grain, which can be slightly affected based on the type of cut.

Environmental

Palisander species are listed on the CITES Appendix II under the genus-wide restriction on all Dalbergia species.  Many species are listed on the IUCN Red List as vulnerable due to a population reduction of over 20% in the last three generations.  The trees have declined naturally, and they also have been exploited.  Therefore, remaining true to our support for sustainable forestry, we only source our Palisander from auditors who certify the sustainable forest operations.  We have only found one supplier of Palisander that harvests the trees in an environmentally responsible way.  We do not use Palisander, or any Rosewood, from wild populations.

When all builders source and manufacture wood building materials with sustainability in mind, we give producers more incentive to continue practicing sustainable forest management.  It also means we live in a healthier world.

Workability:

Palisander is easy to work with, making it a great wood for custom projects.  Due to the natural oils in the wood, extra care is needed when drying, gluing, and finishing.

Rot Resistance:

Palisander ranges from moderately durable to very durable.  We exclusively use it for indoors applications.

All of our wood is kiln dried and stored in a protected warehouse.

We store our wood as S4S, which stands for “surfaced on 4 sides.”  The boards have two flat and parallel faces and two flat and parallel edges.  The boards are first surfaced on both faces (S2S) with a planer, and receive a rip on both edges.
