Cherry

Black Cherry’s rich and subtle reddish brown color makes for a graceful surface for high-end interiors, and brings a sense of warmth to interiors.  It develops a rich patina as it ages, an aesthetic other woods try to imitate with staining.  It is one of the premier hardwoods in the United States for cabinets, floors, walls, and millwork.  Our Cherry is sourced from sustainable forests in the U.S., where we know the farmer or harvester.  We hand select all lumber to provide the best surfaces for luxurious interiors.  It’s an elegant wood that will add a lot of character.

Cherry wood is one of the most prized hardwoods in America, especially with its sought-after patina that happens naturally with age.  It is a smooth-grained, reddish-brown wood that comes from the American Black Cherry fruit tree. We prefer Cherry with a straight grain, and then use different cuts of the wood, including quartersawn and flat.  This provides a uniform texture with random markings.  Cherry is known for its heartwood, but the sapwood of Cherry is also appealing.  It has a lighter color, and shows mineral streaking, pitch pockets, and fine pinholes that add character.  This makes a very sophisticated interior surface material.  Cherry can be used for kitchens, bathrooms, interior flooring and walls, trim and millwork, and veneers.

We hand select and carefully organize lumber and panels for our concept projects.  Because wood is a product of nature, no two pieces  are alike.  Cherry grown in different locations can result in wildly different looks.  Please stop by or order a sample to confirm the look you want.  When the right boards are chosen, and combined in the right way, Cherry can be one of the most elegant woods for interior surfaces.

bring your HOME to life with unique surfaces:

The finish materials you use for the surfaces around your home can become some of the most important focal points in your home.  Using a carefully selected wood for interior floors, cabinets, and other surfaces can add a unique tactile effect that exudes beauty and luxury.  Take advantage of our carefully curated wood options to bring your home to a new standard.

USES:

Cherry wood can be used for cabinets, interior flooring, interior paneling, veneer, and millwork.

Color Range

Cherry heartwood is light pinkish brown when first cut, and darkens to a medium reddish brown with exposure to light.  It will keep darkening over time with light exposure.  Cherry sapwood is a pale yellow.

Cherry wood has traditionally been stained darker, but it doesn’t need to be stained if you appreciate its light to mid-range colors.  It also darkens naturally quite a bit over time.  Cherry will exhibit moderate color variation from board to board.

Grain & Visual Pattern:

Cherry is a closed-grain wood, and typically has a straight grain.  The visual grain pattern changes based on the type of cut, but it generally has an even texture and natural luster.  However, Cherry wood can be found with curls, pin knots, random swirls, gum streaks, and other figured grain patterns.

Texture and Finish:

Cherry is a smooth wood with an even texture, making it easy to work with.  So it’s easy to finish the boards with a light brush or smooth sand.

We believe when it comes to cabinets and interiors, Cherry is one of the most overstained woods.  It’s dark stain results in that familiar and traditional dark reddish color.  Because it darkens naturally, its color and grain can be displayed with a simple matte or gloss finish.  However due to the strong and unpredictable effect of ultraviolet (UV) light speeds on the darkening process, and the major color variations, choosing the correct Cherry lumber and patterns is very important.

Environmental

This wood species is not listed in the CITES Appendices or the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species.  Sapwood is common in Cherry wood.  If the right lumber is not chosen, it may contribute to high waste.

We source our Cherry wood from trees cultivated in the United States by environmentally responsible harvesters.  When the building industry sources and manufactures building materials with sustainability in mind, we all live in a healthier world.

Workability:

Cherry is one of the easiest woods to work with.  It is stable, straight-grained, and works easily with our CNC machines, as well as hand tools.  However Cherry is a difficult wood to stain, and can sometimes result in a blotchy look.  Special additional procedures have to be used if staining it.

Decay Resistance:

Cherry is rated as very durable.  It is resistant to decay, and holds up very well over time when manufactured properly and used indoors.

Kiln dried:

All of our wood is kiln dried and stored in a protected warehouse.

We store our wood as S4S, which stands for “surfaced on 4 sides.”  The boards have two flat and parallel faces and two flat and parallel edges.  The boards are first surfaced on both faces (S2S) with a planer, and receive a rip on both edges.

BULK Commercial Pricing

Because we have become known for our unique material selection, we do sell wood slabs to third parties.  If you are working on a large project and in need of large amounts or slabs, we can offer great pricing for bulk orders.  We can also finish the wood for your project.  However, our wood is hand selected for superior appearance and performance, so contact us to confirm availability and to receive a quote.
