Using wood in homes is a proven way to connect occupants to nature.
Wood, when properly selected and finished, can be warm and beautiful. It invites a connection to nature, creates a sense of comfort, and displays craftsmanship.
Wood is one of the most eco-friendly building materials when responsibly sourced. We recommend using wood from trees in the area where you are building. In Southern California, where we are located, Oak and Maple are common, as well as some other deciduous trees. Therefore we are partial to White Oak, Red Oak, and Maple for floors, cabinets, and other surfaces. For walls, add Cedar and Hemlock to the mix. And for cabinetry, consider Walnut and Birch. But the great thing about the U.S. is we have many different tree species growing, offering a wide range to choose from. Based on our cutting and finishing of these different wood species, we can create different character from the same tree. Think of wood not as a single material, but as a palette of living options, each with their own charm, that give your home soul. Below are just a few options to choose from.

We believe in sourcing wood sustainably. Buying wood locally directly connects your home to it’s surroundings, and also means it doesn’t need to be shipped that far. With the help of local arborists and millers, wood can be rescued and upcycled instead of entering landfills.
We also support the early pioneer practice of live-Sawing from mature, slow-growth trees, resulting in tight natural grain variations. By using the entire log, you get longer and wider planks, and minimal wasted wood.the entire log, you get longer and wider planks, and minimal wasted wood.
