Travertine – Tan – Porous

Travertine is a classic stone for construction.  It is a limestone that forms from a chemically unique sedimentary stone, creating many small holes in the body of the stone, allowing larger crystalline structures to grow.  This gives travertine its unique look.  These holes can either be displayed or filled.  It is a calcareous stone, meaning it is mainly composed of calcium carbonate.  It has been used in construction and for decorative purposes since ancient Rome.  Tile thickness is 1/2″.

Travertine is formed from limestone drip deposits from caves and hot springs, or from evaporation of river water.  When water drips from stalactites and stalagmites and evaporates, calcium carbonate is left behind. This causes the stone's veins, swirls, and unique patterns.

The stone is relatively soft, ranking softer than marble on the Mohs Hardness Scale, so it can easily etch or stain.  It is also porous, so we recommend sealing and protecting it from debris penetrating the material.  Travertine is sensitive to acids typically found in kitchens, so we recommend it for other indoor areas like bathrooms or fireplace surrounds.  However, monuments and temples all over the world were built with travertine.  It can be used for exterior walls, or pavers for paths, patios, and courtyards.

The graining is varied and rich, ranging from straight grained to wavy and irregular.  Its color ranges from whitish cream to darker grays and browns with streaks in various colors (even red and yellow) and patterns.  We love travertine with a subtle, straight grain but also with stronger patterns.  Travertine can be used for kitchens, bathrooms, interior floors and walls, and exterior applications.

We hand select our natural stones to assure the best look and texture.  Because stone is a product of nature, no two pieces are alike.  Travertine from different locations can result in different looks.  Please stop by or order a sample to confirm the look you want.  When the right stone is chosen, and composed in the right way, travertine can be one of the most unique stones for interior and exterior surfaces.

USES:

Travertine can be used for flooring and wall surfaces, both for indoor and outdoor applications.

Color Range

Travertine is a natural stone with light to medium creams, grays and browns.  Sometimes it exhibits a yellow or reddish tint.  Some tiles show contrasting colors, creating a more rustic aesthetic.

Travertine does exhibit strong color variation from slab to slab, so selecting specific tiles is important.

Grain & Visual Pattern:

Travertine’s visual variations allow for a range of aesthetics.  Its grain can be straight and refined, or wavy and even irregular with a rugged appearance.

Rustic looking Travertine can be found with holes, tracks, and streaks.

Carefully selecting the pattern of the travertine for your project is recommended to find your tailored look.

Texture and Finish:

Travertine stone has a naturally rough texture due to its holes.  Therefore, it is suitable for:

  • a naturally aged finish
  • a rustic finish with a rough texture
  • a brushed finish

The holes in travertine can also be filled, providing a smooth and even texture, making it great for:

  • a satin finish
  • a light brush finish
  • a smooth, mechanically sanded finish
  • a polished or high-gloss finish

However, due to the many different colors and pattern anomalies found with different stones, the right finish will depend on the travertine tiles you choose.

Environmental

We believe when the building industry sources and manufactures building materials with sustainability in mind, we all live in a healthier world, and we want to do our part.  Travertine tiles are ecologically friendly.  They do not contain any VOCs, and are better than their non eco-friendly counterparts.
